Tour of Krakow Old Town

krakow_stare_miasto_-_ul._kanonicza.jpg (470×353)The first part of Krakow we officially toured was the old city of Krakow. It has a typical layout of an old medieval city with a large main square and roads radiating off of each of the corners. We started the tour in the north where part of the old fortified wall was not torn down. On the entrance tower was the Polish Eagle with a crown. The story goes that the communists took the crown off the symbol's head because the crown symbolized centers of power, and then it returned after the fall of communism. On the other side of the tower was a scene with some saint who was supposed to keep cities safe from fire and then an emblem of Krakow depicting a building with three towers. We walked down the street and made it to the Kościół Mariacki (St. Mary's Church). I've already toured inside it, but we toured again and this time our tour guide was actually able to tell us about all the art work. The main alter was really cool and had the twelve apostle depicted with Mary in a scene of her assumption to heaven. It was by a German artist who used people from the city as models.

We then left and walked to go see Wawel Castle where the Polish kings lived. We walked up a really big hill to get to the place. At the top we were greeted by a statue of Pope John Paul and then we proceeded to the cathedral, but it was closed. Outside the cathedral are some bones, which are supposed to be a dragons bones. They're pretty cool, but are actually whale and rhino bones. We'll be going back to the cathedral soon because it's supposed to be very beautiful. After that, we walk back and took the tram back to Piast. I don't remember now, but I'm sure I went out pierogi for dinner later on.
