Today, April 10th, 2010, a Polish delegation was flying to Russia to commemorate the Katyń Massacre which was the killing of Polish prisoners of war in 1940 by Russian forces. Among to the massacred were Polish politicians, intellectuals, and military officers. Not until 1990 did the Russian government confirm that the massacre had indeed happened.Well the delegation which had been flying to the memorial included many politicians and most importantly the Polish president Lech Kaczyński. The plane crashed while trying to land at the foggy air force base in Russia and there were no survivors. I first heard the news while reading facebook messages. It was a sad day in Poland and very solemn. Many events were canceled as a result of the national day of mourning. I went to the mass they had for the people who had passed away. It was held at the cathedral in Wawel castle, and so many people attended that I watched the mass outside of the castle on a big screen. Everywhere in Poland you can see polish flags with black ribbons hanging from them and people are still in disbelief.
